Community Ultrasound
The Community Ultrasound service provided by Physiological Measurements Limited (PML) allows patients aged 18 and over to have an ultrasound scan in a surgery or medical centre closer to where they live rather than having to go to hospital.
About the service
Ultrasound scans are generally carried out by a sonographer using high specification imaging equipment. They can look at the following areas to support medical diagnosis:
- General Abdominal
- Gynaecology (excluding pregnancy ultrasound scans)
- Renal/Bladder
- Scrotal/testicular
- Lumps and bumps
- Hernia (abdominal and inguinal)
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm (checking for a bulge or swelling of the aorta)
They will seek further advice from a Consultant Radiologist if necessary.
Scans are sent back to GPs who can then consider the best course of treatment. This allows patients to remain under the care of their GP who can then arrange treatment in community services (where available) or in hospital.
