New video gives practical tips for patients with respiratory illness this winter

Hertfordshire and west Essex Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) has produced a short video to highlight some key winter advice for patients with respiratory illnesses such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Charles, 57, who suffers from COPD met with Gillian Austin, Respiratory/Pulmonary Clinical Lead at Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust to get some advice on how to stay well when the weather dips and the video highlights her recommendations.

Key advice for staying well:

  • Have your flu jab as one as well as the one-off pneumonia jab
  • Wrap up warm and wear a scarf over your mouth
  • Keep your house a minimum of 18’C
  • Best to go outside during the warmest part of the day, usually 11 am and 2pm
  • Avoid people with colds
  • Carry out some indoor exercises to keep you warm
  • Make sure you have your emergency pack of antibiotics and steroids, if recommended by your GP,  and that you know your symptoms and take action quickly
  • It’s okay to use more puffs of your blue inhaler or Ventolin, though recommend to use with a spacer
  • If you have started you antibiotics or steroids and are not feeling better in 48 hours call your GP, practice nurse or 111 for further guidance
