Health services over the festive period

The NHS locally is reminding people to plan ahead for the medicines they need over the holiday period.

One of the things you can do is to see if you are running out of your prescription medication. If you need to order more, it is important to know your local pharmacies’ opening hours in order to be able to pick up your medication. Over Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day there are many pharmacies in the area that will be open.

If you rely on regular prescription medication, check now whether you have enough to see you through the festive period. It is also important to keep a stocked medicine cabinet, with items such as cold and flu relief.

Dr Nicolas Small, local GP and Chair of Herts Valleys CCG, said:

“GP surgeries and pharmacies often require 48 hours’ notice to prepare a repeat prescription.”

As well as the help you can receive in your local pharmacies, NHS 111 can help if you have an urgent medical problem and you’re not sure what to do. If you are worried about yourself or your child over the busy festive period do not hesitate to call 111 or visit www.111.nhs.uk.

Free to use, NHS 111 advisers and clinicians will help you to find the best service for your needs, whether that’s an out-of-hours GP appointment, emergency dentist or even a referral to A&E. It’s really important to use the right NHS service for your specific symptoms or condition and NHS 111 will help you with this.

With this in mind, we encourage people to also talk to a pharmacist should they begin to fall ill over these times and make use of the services provided in these facilities. Pharmacists are able to give you a wide range of treatment advice for a variety of minor illnesses, they will also be able to tell you if you need to go to see a doctor. The sooner you get advice, the sooner you will recover and we hope with the knowledge of opening times should fall ill you’re able to get the help you need.
