Over 2,000 people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in west Hertfordshire per year

  • The number of people in west Hertfordshire who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2017/18 rose by 2,130

  • It is estimated that 18.7% of the population in NHS Herts Valleys Clinical Commissioning Group have diabetes, or at high risk of developing of diabetes

  • Diabetes costs the NHS £9.8 billion per year and it’s rising

The statistics from NHS England are highlighted as part of Diabetes Prevention Week running from 1 – 7 April 2019. It’s also estimated that over five million people in England are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

As part of the campaign, GPs across west Herts are raising awareness of Healthier You: Diabetes Prevention Programme. This is a lifestyle change programme which helps those at risk of Type 2 diabetes to reduce their risk by helping participants to manage their weight, eat more healthily and be more active.

Dr Nicola Cowap, Watford and Three Rivers GP and Diabetes Clinical lead at Herts Valleys Clinical Commissioning Group, said:

“If you are worried that you may be at risk of developing diabetes, take up the offer of a free NHS Health Check which will assess your risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. You can also ask your GP or practice nurse for a blood test to check your blood sugar levels.

“If you are invited to attend an NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme session, I really recommend you do. Over 14,000 people have already been referred in our area, with over 40% taking up the offer. Of those who completed the programme and adopted a healthier lifestyle, their average weight loss was 3.95kg, helping reduce their risk of getting Type 2 diabetes.”

GPs are encouraging people to:

  • Go to to get an estimate of your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
  • Take up the offer of a free NHS Health Check which will assess your risk of diabetes and other diseases
  • Speak to your GP practice, if you think you may be at risk
  • Take up the offer if you are invited to join the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (DPP),
  • Find out more about your local DPP: or ask a member of your GP practice team

For people across west Hertfordshire who have already been diagnosed with diabetes, there is now a greater network of support with the recent launch of the Herts Valleys Integrated Diabetes Service. This service brings together the various clinical services that support diabetics in an integrated service including community diabetes nurses, podiatry and mental health services; giving GPs a single point of referral so patients are seen by the right person and service for their needs.
