Personal health budgets for continuing healthcare

A personal health budget is a set amount of money to give you all the support and services agreed between you (or your representative) and your local NHS team. The budget is the money we would spend on services if we were organising your care. It can be provided in a number of ways – including direct payments – to suit each person and their care and support plan. You will be able to use it for a range of things to help you meet your needs and achieve your outcomes. Those might come from the NHS, the private sector, or voluntary organisations – but they will be tailored to you.

Do you, a family member or someone you look after need on-going care and support for a complex health condition? Did you know that anyone who is currently eligible, or becomes eligible, for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding now has the right to have their own personal health budget?

In line with NHS England guidance, we are starting to explore the opportunities for personal health budgets for people outside of those eligible for Continuing Healthcare. We will keep these pages updated and you can find out more.

With the option of a personal health budget, there’s an opportunity to have more choice and control over how your health and wellbeing needs can best be met. With the help of our NHS professionals, it’s a way to get treatment and care that can benefit you most.

You don’t have to change the healthcare and support that is working well for you. But if there’s something that isn’t working, or maybe help delivered in a different way is needed, you can change that. You can take some or all of your personal health budget as a direct payment. The aim is to help you take more control over your health and wellbeing. We see you (or your representative) as an expert in the ways to meet your needs.

To decide whether a personal health budget could be best for you, talk to the NHS professionals in your Continuing Healthcare team.
